2008/2009 4 Year Graduate Support Package
Graduates are fully supported as detailed below for their first four years.
Grads in their 5th – 8th years are not supported by the department but may be employed for example as a TA or Graduate Student Researcher. Students cannot receive support after 8 years.
Year 1:
Academic year (9 month) support package: $21,000
- Academic year base stipend $19,000 (this includes one TA appointment)
- Research expense account $2,000
- Full fees and health insurance.
- Full tuition for non-residents.
Year 2-4:
Academic year (9 month) support package: $19,000
- Academic year base stipend $19,000 (this includes two TA appointments)
- Full fees and health insurance.
Year 5-8:
Available support (via TA or other employment)
- 1 quarter 50% TAship: $5,463.67 (10/01/07 scale).
- 1 quarter 50% GSR appointment: $5,580 (10/01/07 scale).
- Student is responsible for fees. (Fee balance during TA quarter: $165.03)
Grads in their 5th – 8th years are not considered supported by the department. They receive their support from available TA and GSR appointments and must cover their fees. While there are TA appointments available within the department, these cannot be guaranteed. Priority for available TAships is given first to 5th year grads.
Available earnings for Summer:
- Summer Session TAships: $2,786 per course (50%).
- Graduate Student Researcher (GSR): $3,543 per month (100%).
The annual total earnings for a typical first year student with one summer TAship is $21,786.
Other Department Support for all Graduates:
- Anderson Travel/ Research Program typical annual award per student: $400 - $500
- 20% bonus stipend and TA release for students with own extramural funding.
Students are encouraged to apply for outside sources of funding. Students receiving their own competitive extramural funding during their first four years will receive an additional 20% of the award received over the academic year. During a student’s 2nd through 4th years, this competitive extramural funding will also release student from one TA assignment.
The Department provides additional support for any student obtaining an outside fellowship. The Office of Graduate Studies website has information on fellowship opportunities.
