External Support

Receiving an outside scholarship or fellowship is a great benefit to your career both while in graduate school and after graduation. Visit the OGS website  for possible funding opportunities. You may also speak with Psychology’s Fund Manager for information about applying for extramural funds. We encourage all graduate students to apply for fellowships and scholarships; every such award reduces the financial burden on the department and makes it easier for us to honor our commitment to all students.

Students successful in obtaining extramural support will receive an additional 20% supplement and/or TA release (details below). Furthermore, the department will attempt to maintain this higher level of support for one additional year beyond the end of the competitive fellowship, if student is still within first four years.

1. Competitive extramural award
20% of award paid as salary over the academic year – up to max. OGS limit.
TA release if possible (must TA once) if award is at least $10,000.

2. Non-competitive award w/ research component (i.e., training grant)
20% of award paid as salary over the academic year if award under $10,000.
TA release if possible (must TA once) if award over $10,000.

3. Diversity or other non-research fellowship
20% of award paid as salary over the academic year.
No TA release. Must TA twice.

4. GSRs Paid on Ladder Rank Faculty and Adjunct Grants
20% of award paid as salary over the academic year if award under $5,000.
TA release if possible (must TA once) if award over $5,000 or full GSR support for 1 qtr.
