Graduate Coursework Overview

First through fourth year students are expected to complete the required coursework, initiate & continue their research, while completing all appropriate deadlines for Advancement to Ph.D Candidacy. Prior to advancement, students may must enroll in at least 1 unit of Psychology 296 with their advisor(s) for research units but may potenially enroll in 12 units to ensure a full-time load. After advancement, students enroll in Psychology 299 with their advisor(s) for research units to ensure a full-time load.

First Year Requirements

  • First-year project (270ABC), research project must receive a total rating of 9 of 15 possible points.
  • Two quantitative methods courses (201AB), must each be completed with a B+ or better.
  • Four proseminars (course and area requirements), must be completed with an average of B+ or better and no less than a B- in any given course.

  • Qualifying paper proposal by December 1.

Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or be placed on OGS probation. Students must be enrolled in 12 units minimum each quarter in order to maintain fulltimes status. Students with 12 units of "U" will have a hold placed on their account.

Seven (7) PSYC 500 courses for academic TA credit must be completed with a Pass grade. Four (4) total assignments for students with own outside funding.

* During the Winter quarter there are no colloquiums. Instead students are expected to attend at least five Job Talks.
