Graduate Student Positions and Elections

Elections are held the first week in May. Information on the various positions will be distributed at the end of April. Part of being a supported grad student in psychology is being active within the department. While this encompasses a number of aspects it includes service within the department, whether that be participating and assisting with departmental events or filling a graduate officer position.

Grad Reps (2 positions)
Sends welcome letters to in-coming grads, help organize a welcome-the-first-year department picnic, organize a grads-only fall barbecue at La Jolla Shores, organize quarterly Psychology Socials, help Admission Rep organize new graduate student recruitment weekend and events, organize spring elections, organize post-Little APS softball game, attend grad relevant faculty meetings, help resolve grad/department disputes and miscommunications, serve as a resource to the department on what grads are up to and to grads on what the department is up to, additional duties as required. It is a lot of work, but not without its benefits. You get to see some of the inner workings of the department; and if you do your job well you can earn the friendship of faculty and staff members. Requirements for Grad Rep: Need to be available for the month of September, must be second through fourth year, fourth year must have qualified by start of year. Elected position. TA priority. $600 bonus paid at the end of the academic year.

Admission Rep
Sits on the department’s Graduate Admissions Committee, reviews and evaluates files of applicants. Helps coordinate the visit of applicants: housing, dinner, information meeting with current grad students. Elected position. $200 bonus paid at the end of winter quarter.

Faculty Recruitment Rep
Will be responsible for 1) reading/looking over the files of potential candidates who have been asked to come for job talks; 2) helping the candidate set up for the talk and taping the job talk; 3) helping with minor escorting of the candidates around the department and to meetings; 4) organize the grad breakfast for job candidates; 5) soliciting feedback from grads about the candidates and representing the grad position on candidates to the faculty at a faculty meeting. These duties will take place almost exclusively during winter quarter. Elected position. $200 bonus paid at the end of winter quarter.

Colloquium Reps (6 positions)
Coordinate colloquium speaker’s day at UCSD with Jenny Cantor (including pick-up and return to airport, setting up itinerary, organize meeting with faculty), advertising talks, go to lunch with the speaker, organize the post-colloquium reception, etc. A good opportunity to spend time with leading academics from other institutions and also get to know our own faculty. Elected positions. $50/qtr bonus for Fall and Spring quarters.

Graduate Student Association (GSA) Reps (2 positions)
Attend GSA council meetings, vote on issues that affect grad students as a whole, serve on GSA or campus committees, forward appropriate e-mail to their constituents. It’s a good way to become involved in campus-wide politics. Elected. $200/qtr bonus for Fall and Spring quarters.

TA Coordinator (Senior TA)
This is a paid position that coordinates the TA Mentors (who are responsible for assisting the first year TAs with giving their first lecture and then providing feedback). Senior TA handles TA conflicts, arranges the CTD Orientation in the Fall, the Public Speaking Seminar in the Spring, a workshop for first year students, and applies for subsequent year’s funding. Also responsible for arranging WebCT, Powerpoint, and Parscore training workshops, coordinating “Little APS” practice talks for first year students. Senior TA also handles duties in summer following year of assignment. Elected. $600 bonus paid at the end of the academic year.

Statistics Assistant
Assist all psychology graduate students with questions regarding experimental design and data analysis (especially those working on first year projects). Teach interested students how to perform simple statistical analyses (e.g., t-test, ANOVA, regression) using a statistical package of the Statistical Assistant’s choice (e.g., SPSS, JMP, etc.). Hold statistical workshops at least twice a quarter where general questions about statistics and the selected statistical package can be answered. Position assumed by Psyc 201A & B TA. $600 bonus per quarter, paid at the end of the academic year.

Psych 90 Grad Leader
Coordinates small courses for beginning psychology students. Arranges for professors to give informal talks on their research and sub-field of psychology. Facilitates discussion and introduces faculty to students for potential research assistantships (199s). Schedules literature search training and provides information on the honors program and graduate school. Position is chosen by the Undergraduate Advisor. $1,000 bonus paid at the end of the academic year.
