Other Support Opportunities within the Department

Summer employment and additional academic year appointments
Graduate students may request and be assigned TA appointments for Summer Session, which pays $2,828 per course (at 50% time). Occasionally, there are also opportunities for additional 25% TA appointments during the academic year to meet the department’s teaching assistant needs.

Travel and Research Awards
Travel and Research funds are available from multiple sources. These include the department’s Anderson Travel Grant, Dean’s Social Science Research Travel funds, and the Intercampus Travel Grants, each with their own calls and applications for funding. Students are eligible (and encouraged) to apply to multiple funding opportunities and may combine awards from different sources.

1) Anderson Travel Grant
Twice a year, the Graduate Coordinator will issue a call for fund requests for travel to scholarly events and research funds paid for via a generous gift from Norman Anderson.
Those without outside grant funding and those with seniority are given preference. The size of the award varies with available funding but awards in the $500 range are not uncommon.

2) Dean’s Social Science Research Travel Fund
Awards will be given for presenting research papers at meetings organized by professional societies, universities, institutes, or other academic organizations. Proof of the invitation to participate must be supplied, along with a one-page synopsis of the paper. These funds are also available for field research, for which a one-page description of the research, its significance, and its need to be conducted outside of San Diego must be submitted. In addition, all applicants should include a Curriculum Vitae, Budget for airfare, hotel, per diem (Note: The travel award will only cover the equivalent of coach airfare) and a letter of recommendation from the student's advisor. Any research involving human subjects must be approved by the Human Subjects Committee, and research involving animals must be approved by the Animal Subjects Committee. The date and approval number should be included in the application (or if pending, a copy of the IRB cover letter should be attached). All standard university rules for funding travel must be followed. Awards will cover only the equivalent of coach air fare. No one may receive more than one award in any academic year. Applications are typically due in January and recipients are announced the first week of February. A Research Committee of senior social scientists from the Division will evaluate the applications. If there are any questions, please contact ssdean@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-6073.

3) Intercampus Travel Grant
The Intercampus Travel grant cannot be used for UC colloquium speakers, even when combined with research collaboration. In fact, when it is only research collaboration and thus eligible to use these funds, they want to see the names of those that were met with. It is appropriate to use these funds for committed research projects for on-campus faculty. Grads can use these funds as well to travel to other UCs.
