General Education Requirements for a B.A. in Psychology

GEs for the major should be completed by the end of the sophomore year. These requirements will guarantee an adequate background for the topics of the upper division psychology courses:

1. Natural Science

Three lower division, general introductory natural science courses from the listing of the approved UCSD courses below or their transfer equivalent. (The three courses can be distributed in any manner):

Biology: 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, 24, or 26 (effective Fa08 BILD 12 and COGS 17 not accepted)

Chemistry: 4, 6A, 6B, 6C, 11, 12, or 13

Physics: 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 10, or 11

2. Formal Skills (Mathematics or Logic)

Three quarters of university level mathematics, of which one course must be calculus. The other two courses may consist of any combination of courses in calculus or logic.

Mathematics: 10A, 10B, 10C; 20A, 20B, or 20C

Philosophy (Logic): 10 or 12

3. Computer Programming

One quarter of computer programming:

CSE 3, 5A, 8A, 8B, 11, 12, MAE 5, 9, 10, or CogSci 18 (CogSci 3 will not count)

Note: All Courses listed under 1 - 3 may be taken Pass/No Pass.

4. Statistics

One quarter of statistics:

Psychology 60, CogSci 14, Soc Sci 60, Math 11, Econ 120A, Math 181 THERE ARE 4 MATH 181 COURSES A,B,C,D (difficult), Math 183 (regular stats), BENG 100, or BIEB 100.

Note: Statistics must be taken for a letter grade. A grade of "B" or better is needed to participate in Psychology 111A & B (Advanced Statistics and Research). Upper-division Course Requirements for the B.A. in Psychology

 

Upper Division Requirements

A minimum of twelve upper-division Psychology courses is required of which five have to be taken from the Core Courses (101 - 106) and seven from the Elective Courses (107-193). A minimum of six upper-division courses have to be taken at UCSD. These upper-division courses have to be taken for a letter grade; courses taken as Pass/No Pass prior to declaring psychology as a major cannot be used to satisfy the major requirement. Excluded from credit towards the major are Psychology 199 (Special Studies); however, Psychology 195 (Instructional Assistance) can be credited once. A grade-point average of at least 2.0 in the upper-division courses of the major is required for graduation.
